Anne Reiber DeWindt

Anne Reiber DeWindt, 81, former professor of history at Wayne County Community College, died March 31 at Cobbdale Assisted Living in Fairfax, VA. Born on August 8, 1943 in Beatrice, NE, she was the first child of the late Paul Reiber and Doris Nelson Reiber. She had Alzheimer's disease.

She earned her bachelor’s from Wellesley College and her doctorate from the University of Toronto, where she studied at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies. She dedicated her career to researching the lives of everyday people and published widely on the topic, exemplified by her oft-cited article “Witchcraft and Conflicting Visions of the Ideal Village Community.” Together with her husband, the late Edwin Brezette DeWindt, she also co-authored books including their decades-long project “Ramsey: The Lives of an English Fenland Town, 1200-1600.”

A beloved sister and aunt, survivors include siblings Kristin Reiber Harris of Brooklyn, NY and Paul Reiber of Caspar, CA; nieces and nephews: Jason Aufdenberg, Diana Garcia, Jade Hatheway, and Leila Anne Harris; and 5 grand-nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by brother Nelson Reiber and nephew Mischa Reiber. A private memorial will be held in Detroit, MI.
