Asia Leigh Young, born on March 1, 1935, in Newark, New Jersey, to Kim and Soo Hoo Garmew, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2025, in Ashburn, Virginia. She lived a life full of love, laughter, and determination, and her impact on those around her will not be forgotten.

Asia grew up in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where she formed deep bonds with her childhood friends, famously known as "The Wolverines." A bright student, she graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1953, taking on leadership roles as the captain of the flag-waving squad and Vice President of the Leader's Club. Her involvement in the Intramural Team and the Italian Club showcased her vibrant, engaging spirit and a young age.

Asia's journey into motherhood began when she married Gene Leigh, welcoming two boys, Michael and Steven, into the world. The family adventure included a move to Pacific Grove, California, before returning to their roots in New Jersey and later settling in Cedar Grove. As a newly single mother, Asia balanced the challenges of raising her two boys while working two jobs: as a Hostess at The Great Wall of China and as a secretary at the Cedar Grove Town Hall, demonstrating her unwavering resilience.

Her life took a transformative turn when she met John Young during a night out in New York City, introduced by his sister, May Young. Their love blossomed swiftly, leading to marriage in August 1964 at the Umberger's estate in Cedar Grove. Together, they welcomed two daughters, Debra and Suzanne, and settled into a loving home on Lakewood Avenue, which became a cherished gathering place until 1990 when the family moved to Lynwood Road. As a dedicated stay-at-home mom during her daughters' early years, Asia devoted herself to their upbringing, engaging in their school activities and classes while also working part-time at her father-in-law’s deli.

When she returned to the workforce full-time, she found her professional home with Adronics Elrob in Cedar Grove. Her hard work and commitment earned her many promotions, culminating in her role as head of payroll before she retired in 2000.

Retirement ushered in a new phase for Asia, filled with travel and adventure. She embraced the world, visiting California, Las Vegas, Arizona, Paris, and enjoying a magnificent multi-country cruise to Spain, Italy, and France. Her hobbies reflected her vibrant personality—poker with a group of core friends whose friendships lasted for decades, bowling, crafting, and gardening, mahjong, and puzzles, She was a talented cook, master not of Chinese cuisine, but learned Polish and Italian from neighbors in Bloomfield. A lover of cats, she nurtured many beloved feline companions throughout her life, including Monster, Thunder, Sapphire, Oreo, and Pumpkin.

Following the passing of her beloved husband John in 2008, Asia relocated to Ashburn, Virginia, where she resided with her daughter Debra, son-in-law Wolfgang, and granddaughters Tabitha and Valerie. In 2009, she moved to Ashby Ponds, a senior living community where she thrived socially. She flourished in her new environment. At 74, she built a new life for herself, a new chapter, after being a caregiver her entire life. She participated in activities such as bocce, poker, gardening, and even the Ashby Olympics, creating an extended family of friends who enriched her life and made many cherished friends at the local; senior center.

Asia’s warmth and charm made her a vibrant presence in any room. As a selfless caretaker, she prioritized her family's happiness and well-being, filling her home with laughter and compassion. She fostered genuine connections, welcoming newcomers into her life with open arms and radiant smiles.

Remembering Asia Leigh Young means celebrating a life filled with kindness, friendship, and a deep commitment to family. She leaves behind her children Michael Leigh, Steven Leigh and his wife Donna, Debra Gruen and her husband Wolfgang, and Suzanne Young; her grandchildren Jesse Leigh, Tabitha Gruen, and Valerie Gruen; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
