Barbara Ann Morningstar (née Erzen), known affectionately to many as Barb or B-Barb, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2026, in Hagerstown, Maryland. Her life, spanning 86 luminous years from her birth on May 6, 1940, in the heart of Washington, DC, was marked by quiet perseverance, enduring devotion, and the steady warmth of love given and received.

Barbara’s days began in Washington, DC, where she drew her first breaths into a world in the throes of immense change. The child of Edith and Dominick Erzen, she embraced the values her parents instilled in her—kindness, curiosity, and an unwavering sense of family. The tapestry of her early life was brightly woven with the presence of her brother, John, and the extended embrace of family that would remain the pulse of her journey.

Life beckoned Barbara forward, and in time she joined hands with James Morningstar, her beloved husband, with whom she built a life rich in both laughter and quiet moments. James preceded her in death, a loss that Barbara bore with the same courage and grace that defined her spirit.

Barbara’s legacy of love thrives through her daughter, Patti Littleton, who reflected back to her all the care and integrity that were hallmarks of Barbara’s character. Patti’s husband, Bear Littleton, stood not only as a son-in-law, but as another cherished member of Barbara’s inner circle, sharing in the memories and moments that constitute a family’s unique history.

Barbara’s role as a sister was tenderly evident in her lasting relationship with John Erzen, her brother, who survives her. Her influence extended into the next generation, embraced by her nephews, John Erzen II (Joy) and Matthew Erzen, .

She was preceded in death by her devoted parents, Edith and Dominick, whose love and example shaped so much of her steadfast nature.

In her passing, Barbara draws together those who loved her into a circle of remembrance—where tears may fall, but they will often be outnumbered by smiles.

There will be a celebration of life at a later date by her loved ones in the light of her memory, heartened by all she gave, and all she remains.
