Barbara Stauffer Strite, age 64, passed away on September 19, 2026 after a short and courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
Barbara was born on August 26, 1962, in Hagerstown, Maryland, and grew up in Falls Church, Virginia. She graduated from George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, Virginia, and received her bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in special education from George Mason University. She taught special education in the Fairfax County, Virginia, school system for many years; most recently at Colvin Run Elementary School.
Barbara is survived by her mother, Ruhamah Miller Strite of Inwood, West Virginia; her brother, David S. Strite; sister-in-law, Lisa Strite; nephew, Matthew Strite; and niece Meghan Strite Kasko (Chase Kasko), all of Louisville, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Strite. Family meant a great deal to Barbara, and she was especially proud of being part of a large and close-knit family including aunts, uncles, and cousins who regularly shared dinners, holidays, and birthday celebrations.
Barbara loved the beach, gardening, and crafts. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by family, friends, co-workers, and the many students whose lives she touched over the years.
One of Barbara’s proudest accomplishments—and a remarkable part of her life—was her kidney transplant. For 29 years her transplanted kidney continued to function well, right up until her death. She was enormously proud and grateful for those years and the gift of life her transplant gave her. Memorial gifts may be made to the National Kidney Donation Organization (website: https://www.nkdo.org).
Memorial Service and interment will be at Gerrardstown Presbyterian Church, 372 Dominion Rd., Gerrardstown, WV on October 17, 2026 at 11:00 AM.
