Craig Lambert Fox

Craig Lambert Fox, 87, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2024 at his Arlington home, where he had lived for the past year. A lifelong resident of the DC area, Craig was born in Washington in 1937, to Ada Anderson Fox and Le Vern Fox. He lived most of his life in Alexandria.

Lucky is the man who finds his calling. By that measure of a life, Craig was blessed. He seemed destined to be a haberdasher, and dedicated his life to the trade for more than fifty years.

His interest in men’s clothing began as a teenager, working part time at Windsor Men’s Shop in Alexandria, and being voted Best Dressed by his classmates at George Washington High School. While attending George Washington University (class of 1960), Craig formed a friendship with Sigma Alpha Epsilon brother William Frank, and together they established fine men’s clothier Wm. Fox & Co. in 1965.

Craig assumed sole ownership of the shop in 1975. As small businesses gave way to corporate chains and shopping malls, and men’s fashion became more casual, Craig refused to compromise and kept the business alive. Under his direction, Wm. Fox & Co. became a DC institution. Craig retired in 2020, but the tradition continues under master tailor Shafiq Halim.

Craig was a soft-spoken and modest gentleman, respected by clients for his impeccable taste, and beloved by friends and family for his generosity, even temper, and unique sense of humor. He enjoyed golf, gardening, listening to music (especially jazz and 1970s soul), beach vacations, and hosting family dinners. Craig had an uncommon ability to remain friends with ex-wives and girlfriends.

He is survived by daughter Laura (Sol Schott) and sons Billy and Ryan, significant other Cidette Perrin, and former wives Lenora Rose and Judith Wennerberg. A celebration of life will be held July 29th, 4pm at Old Dominion Boat Club.
