With a heavy heart, we mourn the passing of Don Laing (Donald McVicar Laing IV), who took his last breath on June 11, 2024. Don was a man of remarkable achievements and profound kindness, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born in Valparaiso, Indiana, on October 8, 1959, Don embarked on a joyful journey filled with passion and dedication that led him to become the esteemed Chief Human Resources Officer at the National Academy of Sciences.
His illust career was characterized by a commitment to building and fortifying HR initiatives that aimed to elevate organizations to new heights. Prior to his tenure at NAS, Don held pivotal positions in various prestigious entities such as the American Diabetes Association, Special Olympics, Northrop Grumman (Litton PRC), Cincinnati Bell Information Systems, and Tenix. This was all accomplished due to his educational determination to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from National Louis University.
Beyond his professional achievements, Don's larger than life personality left an everlasting impact on all those around him. With an infectious smile and a heartwarming demeanor, he had an uncanny ability to bring people together. Whether it was hosting gatherings for big or small moments in life, you could count on him to curate the perfect playlist on Spotify for it.
Don's love for food knew no bounds. He found immense joy in sharing culinary delights with friends, family, or even strangers. From elaborate tapas feasts to perfectly smoked BBQ meats, Don's culinary creations were surpassed only by the cherished memories and laughter created around the dining table.
In his final moments, Don was surrounded by his beloved family - before finding his way into the waiting arms of his parents; Donald and Shirley Laing, and his precious Maggie. He is survived by his cherished life partner Carole Fell; devoted children Donald Laing V, Chase Long (Ryan), and Kyle Laing; as well as his brother Mark Laing, sister-in-law Lucy Laing, nephew Mark Laing Jr., and niece Angela Laing.
Don Laing's legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering spirit. May his memory be a beacon of light for all who had the privilege of knowing him. Raise your martini glass in a toast to Don - May your legacy forever be etched in our hearts.
