Edwin John Reis, a cherished husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025, at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He lived a fulfilling 94 years, marked by significant achievements and loving relationships. Born on July 23, 1931, in Staten Island, New York, Ed dedicated his life to public service, working for various federal agencies. Known for his intelligence, good instincts, friendliness, and hard work, he rose to top positions, leaving a lasting impact on those around him.
A proud alumnus of Brooklyn College, Ed pursued his law studies at Columbia University, ultimately becoming a lawyer. His commitment to excellence and compassion for others defined his career and personal interactions. Ed was both friendly and supportive, traits that endeared him to family and friends alike.
Ed's passions extended beyond his professional life. He nurtured a profound love for the outdoors, sharing many memorable hikes with his brother, Richard (Rich). Through these shared adventures, they forged a bond that will remain a cherished memory for all who knew them. Ed's creativity shone in his woodworking, as he crafted beautiful furniture that now finds its place in the homes of his next generations. Additionally, his travels allowed him to explore the world, bringing back not just beautiful pictures, but a wealth of stories and memories that he generously shared with family and friends.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Sylvia Jean Reis, his son Charles Reis, and daughter Rebecca Reis. His brother Richard Reis and sister-in-law Mary Ruth Reis, along with Sylvia's cousins Larry and Victoria Rothenberg, hold Ed in their hearts and feel the deep loss of his presence. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Bernard Irwin Reis, and parents David and Esther Reis, who lovingly raised him.
