Fanny Graciela Carrera

Fanny Graciela Carrera, born in Ecuador in November 1922, peacefully passed away on May 22, 2026, at the age of 103. She was a cherished mother to Rosario “Angie” Carrera-Earl, Bellita Del Valle Moore, and Juan A. Ferre.

Fanny's early life in Ecuador was marked by challenges, including being raised in foster homes and a convent school due to her parents' absence and her untreated profound deafness. Despite these hurdles, she courageously moved to the United States with her young daughter in 1951, working as a housekeeper and seamstress. At age 32, she received her first hearing aid, opening new avenues for communication and connection.

A devout woman, Fanny raised her children in the Catholic faith, later embracing a born-again Christian path, demonstrating her faith through kindness and prayer. Her unwavering belief in LGBTQ rights and immigrant causes was part of her compassionate nature. Her life was a testament to resilience, raising her three children single-handedly and instilling in them hard work, self-sufficiency, and integrity. Despite her limited education, her intellect knew no bounds as she explored subjects ranging from religion to art and science. Her wisdom and compassion left a lasting impression on her family, encouraging them to love all.

In 1997, Fanny graced the Ms. Senior Virginia Pageant stage, singing Ecuadorian folk songs and sharing her life’s philosophy: "I believe in love because love is the healer... It really is a wonderful life." She remained dedicated to a healthy lifestyle and despite a stage 4 cancer diagnosis at 102, she continued to be dedicated to her daily fitness activities through two weeks prior to her death at the age of 103,  .

Her memory will be lovingly carried forward by her children, their spouses, her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, including those who were welcomed into her heart. Her legacy extends to cherished friends and the supportive community at Crossway Fellowship and Bull Run Unitarian Universalists Church. She was grateful for her devoted caregivers from Heartland Hospice, Premier Care USA and private caregivers Nellie and Edna.

Fanny’s life was one of quiet strength and boundless love, forever remembered by all whose lives she touched.
