Francis Leo
Hopwood
June 1, 2026
Francis Leo Hopwood, affectionately known as "Hoppy," passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, in Vienna, Virginia, after a years-long battle with neurological illness. He was 85 years old. Born in Tennessee, Francis’s journey was marked by love, dedication, and a profound kindness that touched all who knew him.
Francis was adopted shortly after birth by Thelma Hobbs. Much later in life, Francis was happy to reunite with his birth mother, Mary, along with three younger siblings and many other blood relatives. This connection brought him great fulfillment and a deeper understanding of his origins.
A man of remarkable commitment, Francis served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy just after finishing high school. Following his service, he pursued higher education and graduated from university, embodying the values of perseverance and hard work. Starting humbly by climbing telephone poles in San Diego, he forged a distinguished career culminating with his work at the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, DC. His dedication supported not only himself but also the loving family he built alongside his wife, Sandra.
Francis shared over sixty cherished years of marriage with Sandra, his devoted wife and unwavering companion. He is survived by Sandra; their two beloved daughters, Anneliese and Mary Kate; and two grandsons, Ignatius and Constantine, who brought him immense joy. Also surviving are Francis' two dear brothers, William and Thomas. He is preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn, whose memory remains a cherished part of his legacy.
Beyond his professional and family life, Francis was a man of many passions. He found pleasure in classical music, with a special fondness for opera. His enthusiasm for HAM radio demonstrated his curiosity and love of technology. He enjoyed acting in amateur theatre, bringing stories to life and sharing dramatic moments. Together with Sandra, Francis traveled the world, exploring diverse cultures and demonstrating their shared love of knowledge.
At his core, Francis was a gentle and compassionate person. He believed in the power of love for our neighbors and the importance of caring for the poor. His sense of justice extended to advocating for fairness, including a belief in taxing the wealthy, revealing an enduring commitment to equity and kindness.
Francis "Hoppy" Hopwood leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and generosity—a life well-lived, beloved by family and friends alike. His memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him, reminding us of the strength found in compassion and the beauty of a heart dedicated to others.
No services will be held; his ashes will be interred with family and friends. Donations may be made in his memory to the Louisiana Center for Children's Rights.
