Gerhard Mally was born in Vienna, Austria on April 12,1935, to Elsa and Franz Mally. After a long illness, just days before his 91st birthday, he passed away peacefully, on April 2, 2026.

Gerhard earned a doctorate in Law from the University of Vienna and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Mally published three Political Science books while he was teaching as an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, and Georgetown.

His distinguished career in the Diplomatic Service at the State Department in Washington DC, reflected his lifelong commitment to public service, international relations and the pursuit of justice. Gerhard was known for his tenacious mind, thoughtful perspective and deep understanding of global affairs.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gerhard will be also remembered as a lifelong chess aficionado, a passion that many of his friends and chess partners can attest to. He also loved the game of tennis and as a young student used to subsidize his travels by teaching tennis wherever he went and a daily swim was his secret to achieving mental clarity and physical relaxation.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 21 years, Monique, his son Robert (Ina), his daughter Jennifer (Chad), his beloved grandchildren, Charlotte and Jacob, his dear sister Elsie (Gerhard), his sister-in-law Ingeborg (Heinz), his nephew Stephan (Anita), and his nieces Petra (Thomas) and Esther.

Gerhard was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Dr. Zenona Mally, his cherished brother Heinz (Ingeborg) and his grandnephew Nico.

A Memorial Mass at the Church of Little Flower followed by a Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
