Helen Mae
Hedge
June 3, 1938 – March 22, 2026
Helen Mae Hedge, devoted mother, pioneering policewoman, and cherished community volunteer, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026, in Woodbridge, Virginia. Born Helen Mae Bosley on June 3, 1938, in Baltimore, Maryland, she lived a life marked by strength, independence, and a deep commitment to family and service.
Helen graduated from Eastern High School in Baltimore and went on to become one of the few women to walk through the police academy doors during her time. Serving as a police officer in the Northeast District of Baltimore, she distinguished herself as a top-notch female officer. Her career in law enforcement was particularly remarkable given the challenges she faced, including restrictions that prevented her from carrying a weapon during critical moments. Despite these obstacles, Helen’s dedication never wavered.
After her years on the force, Helen devoted herself fully to raising her children, choosing to be a stay-at-home mom throughout their elementary education years. Her love and care during those formative years left an indelible imprint on their lives. Following this period, Helen embarked on a lengthy and successful career with Baltimore Gas and Electric, where she contributed her talents and work ethic for 23 years before retiring.
Helen was well known for her loving nature, formidable independence, and unwavering strength. She was, above all else, a true family mom who delighted in nurturing her loved ones. Her cooking was exceptional, and she enjoyed crafting Halloween costumes for her two children every year, demonstrating both her creativity and devotion. Christmas held a special place in her heart, and Helen made this season magical by adorning her home with a white Christmas tree decorated in sparkling gold and silver—an annual tradition that highlighted her love of holiday cheer.
Outside of her professional and family life, Helen had a wide array of interests and pursuits. Always lively and constantly on the go, she enjoyed travel— especially trips with her brother, Donald, while he was sailing the world— boating, bowling, sewing, cooking, mahjong, crossword puzzles, bingo, and various other games. Music of all kinds enriched her days. She also treasured warm weather, sunshine, flowers, her convertible cars, dancing, home decorating, the thrill of finding the best shopping deals, relaxing baths, and the cozy comfort of a crackling fire.
Helen’s commitment to community extended beyond her immediate family. She was a dedicated volunteer for several years at the Maxwell C. King Center for Performing Arts in Melbourne, Florida, where she earned Volunteer of the Year honors in recognition of her outstanding contributions. Her compassion also extended to animals, as exemplified by her involvement with the Brevard animal shelter—a place dear to her heart where her beloved cat, Teardrop, found her. For five decades, Helen was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi, serving in numerous leadership roles including President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, demonstrating her dedication to fellowship and service.
Helen is survived by her son Bradley Webber (Yvonne), her daughter Pamela Kadlubek (Kevin), seven grandchildren—Stephanie, Shannon, Miranda, Courtland, Taylor, Kyle, and Kayla—and ten great-grandchildren, all of whom were sources of immense pride and joy in her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar B.A. Bosley and Genevieve Davis; her brothers Donald and Edgar; and her sister Marie.
Helen Mae Hedge’s legacy is one of resilience, love, and an unwavering commitment to both family and community. Her enduring spirit and the warmth she brought to those around her will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Helen’s remains will return to the sunny warmth of Florida in a private memorial. You may choose to honor her life with a donation to support breast cancer research (www.komen.org) or the mission to cure juvenile diabetes (www.breakthrought1d.org).
