Rachel M. Abraham

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Rachel (Hilde) Margret Abraham, was a woman of endless talents, energy, and intelligence. Rachel was born on February 26,1922 in Germany, and passed away July 25, 2026 peacefully in her Bethesda, MD home. Through her journey of 104 years, she touched many lives through her art, teachings, wisdom, and philanthropy.

Rachel was born in Germany, and escaped the Holocaust as a member of the Hadassah sponsored Youth Aliyah to Palestine in 1938. After reconnecting with displaced family members, she immigrated to the United States from Israel in 1958 with her husband, David Abraham and son, Jonathan Abraham. Rachel and David met in Israel and were married for more than 64 years. After moving to America she built a rewarding career teaching Hebrew to children and preparing them for Bar and Bat Mitzvah. She was a trailblazer in the Bethesda real estate market from the 1980s until the early 2000s. She studied painting, drawing, and sculpting at American University throughout the 1960s and 70s, and continued to indulge in her love of the arts throughout her life. Her art work has been shown and collected over decades throughout the U.S. and abroad. Her other hobbies included skiing, attending musical and theater performances, and enjoying the company of her many loved friends with cake and coffee.

She always supported various organizations through tzedakah (charity) with both her time and resources. Some of the organizations she was most passionate about were; Hadassah, Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, JSSA Hospice, Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, Washington Performing Arts Society, Washington National Opera, Vocal Arts of DC, B’nai Brith International, The Mayo Clinic, Sibley Memorial Hospital, and many more.

She is survived by her son, Jonathan Abraham and his wife Betty Abraham. Her granddaughter and her husband, Maggie and Brandon Lohr, who were the lights of her life. Her closest extended family Herb Lichtenstein and Barbara Hylander. She will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
