Hyonae Shim, lovingly known as "Shimmy Coco," was born on April 27, 1956, in Seoul, Korea. Hyonae peacefully departed this world in the early morning hours of January 1, 2025, surrounded by her cherished artwork and her loving daughter, Jang Me (Rose) Blankenship, who stood by her side during her hospice care in Falls Church, Virginia.
Hyonae was a woman of remarkable talent and passion. Her educational journey brought her to The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she earned both a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1993 and a Master of Fine Arts in 1995. It was during her time in Chicago that she began her career in fashion retail at Saks Fifth Avenue, a field she continued to flourish in after relocating to Virginia, where she held positions at Neiman Marcus and Chanel. Hyonae retired as a fashion advisor from Chanel in January of 2023, leaving a legacy of style and grace that inspired friends, colleagues, and clients alike.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Hyonae was known for her immense love of life. She filled her days with the rhythm of tango and salsa dancing, savoring delicious meals with friends, and enjoying the finest tequila and wine. Her artistic soul thrived through painting and traveling the world, where she learned to speak Spanish and developed new friendships in Spanish-speaking countries.
A beacon of vibrancy and positivity, she spent her life touching the hearts of many with her warm spirit and boundless energy. Hyonae was a force of nature who stood up for herself and others fiercely, leading with her heart and encouraging others to do the same. Her infectious laughter and wisdom resonated deeply, guiding the lives of those fortunate enough to know her. “You do you, Shim does Shim,” was not merely a saying of hers but a motto that represented her strong-will and tenacity.
Hyonae leaves behind her beloved daughter, Jang Me (Rose) Blankenship; her sisters, Soonae Jeon and Sung Ae Lee; her nieces, Tracy Yangrim Song and Marusol Lee; and her nephew, Hyunry Lee. She is reunited in spirit with her late parents, Bong Jun Chon (Father) and Young Ja Na (Mother), and her grandmother, Kyoung Shim Lee.
Her legacy of art, love, and personal expression will forever inspire those who carry her memory. And while Hyonae may no longer walk among us, her spirit will always remain in our hearts, reminding us to embrace life fully and passionately.
