Jacquelyn "Jackie" Guernsey, a beacon of intelligence, humor, and boundless love, passed away accompanied by her loved ones in Virginia on February 8, 2026, at the age of 98. Born on March 30, 1927, in Quincy, Illinois, she carved out a life marked not just by longevity but by meaningful contributions to her community and cherished relationships that shaped her family's legacy.

Jackie's career began as a code breaker for the government, where she served her country during the tumultuous times towards the end of World War II and for several years afterwards. It was at Arlington Hall where destiny took its course, and she met the love of her life, Douglas Guernsey Sr. Their shared journey was one of adventure, including travels across Europe during Doug Sr.'s tours of duty in Germany, where each city they explored became a backdrop to memories ensconced in laughter, love and family.

As devoted as she was to her work, Jackie found her true calling in her role as a mother. She embraced her family with a passion that was palpable; each achievement of her children was a badge of honor she wore with pride. Her living family includes her beloved children, David Guernsey, and his wife, Diane, [granddaughter: Savannah (Matt) and great-grandson on the way]; Douglas Guernsey Jr., and his wife, Donna [grandchildren: Anderson, Rollin and Kajsa (Enrique) and great-granddaughter Valencia]; and her daughter, Alison Short and her late husband, Greg [grandson Tom.] Each shared moment of joy, particularly during holidays filled with laughter and warmth, painted a vibrant tapestry of familial bonds.

With a personality that sparkled as brightly as her intellect, Jackie was a woman to be admired. Her extraordinary sense of humor and sharp wit were hallmarks of her character, establishing her as a beloved figure in the lives of those lucky enough to know her. Her love extended to so many other family members (many in Illinois), wonderful friends she met all through her life and every dog she met along the way! Laughter often resonated in her home, especially during her favorite pastime of playing contract bridge, where she not only honed her skills but also reached the remarkable milestone of being certified as an American Contract Bridge League Life Master—an achievement that reflected her dedication to the game and her competitive spirit.

Jackie’s heart remained forever tethered to those she loved, including her deceased husband, Douglas Guernsey Sr., who was her partner in adventure and love through all seasons of life. Gregory Short, her son-in-law, also held a cherished place in her memories. The presence of these lost loved ones left an indelible mark on Jackie, adding depth to her beautiful journey.

Her life was a powerful testament to resilience, humor, and the importance of family. Jackie Guernsey will be remembered not only for her accomplishments as a code breaker, bridge champion, crossword puzzle enthusiast, a volunteer at her church in Georgia, and many other humanitarian roles, but, more importantly, for the immeasurable love and joy she brought into the hearts of her family. In the quiet moments that follow her departure from this world, her spirit lives on—embracing her loved ones, eternally glowing with warmth as they carry forward her legacy of love, laughter, and connection.

She was devoted to her Catholic faith as she knew that this life is a transition to eternal life with God. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church in Dale City, VA on March 16, 2026, at 11 AM. She will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery with her husband, Douglas Guernsey, at a later date. If you are considering a gift, in lieu of flowers, a donation made to her hospice care workers would be wonderful. If you choose to do that, please make the check out to: "Capital Caring - The Guernsey Center." Thank you from her family.

She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and we all miss her.
