James Thomas "Jimmy" Bennett, beloved husband, father, brother, and veteran, passed away on November 28, 2024, at the age of 78.
Born at Roger Williams Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, on October 15, 1946, Jimmy was the eldest son of Thomas Bennett Sr. and Elizabeth Bennett (née Reynolds). He grew up surrounded by a large family, with two brothers and eight sisters. He is preceded in death by his father, mother, and his brother Robbie Rouse and sister Francis Bennett.
Jimmy was a proud and dedicated member of the U.S. Army, retiring after a distinguished 24-year career with the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC). Throughout his service, he traveled the world, serving in numerous overseas assignments in places such as the Republic of Korea, Vietnam, Okinawa, mainland Japan, Hawaii, Thailand, Taiwan, the Philippines, Kwajalein Atoll, and Eniwetok Island.
Jimmy was a decorated veteran awarded 2 Purple Heart Medals and 2 Meritorious Service Medals.
His military career was marked by a sense of duty, honor, and sacrifice; all of which he carried with him for the rest of his life.
Jimmy is survived by his loving wife, Ellie Bennett, and his two sons, James Bennett Jr. and Joey Bennett. He is also survived by his siblings: Thomas Bennett Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA; Terri Bennett Long of Gibsonville, NC; Carol Bennett Mason of Butler, AL; Nancy Bennett Whaley of Salisbury, NC; Martha Baird-Cochran of Brevard, NC; Sandra Barnett of Butler, AL; Elizabeth Bennett of Brevard, NC; and JoAnn Hamilton of Brevard, NC, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Jimmy will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his country, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who loved and knew him.
