James W. Rhodes (January 28, 1939-May 8, 2026) was born in Canton, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1956-1962, including two years aboard the destroyer USS Cogswell in the Far East and two years serving as a personal assistant for Rear Admiral Hiram G. Rickover, who directed the original development of naval nuclear propulsion. He worked as a Systems Analyst with the U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) for more than 33 years (1962-1995). He had a passion for the growing field of computer technology, designing and maintaining information systems from the early days of punch card mainframes through the advent of personal computers and the internet. He was a longtime resident of Arlington, Virginia, where he lived for over 63 years, including over 52 years in the Glencarlyn community. He was a member and officer of the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS), formerly the National Capital Technology and Computer User’s Group, Inc. (NCTCUG), which teaches community members how to use computer technology, for more than 40 years. He was a beloved and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He lived out his strong moral code steadfast in his guidance, support, and protection of his loved ones. He was a consummate reader and gifted writer, and had a brilliant wit and excellent sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of more than 62 years, Judith A. Rhodes; his brother, Glenn Rhodes, and sister, Patricia Rhodes; his children, Jonathan Alan Rhodes, Christina Rhodes McCrary, Jason Wesley Rhodes, and Jeffrey Lynn Rhodes; and his grandchildren, Thomas A. McCrary IV, Justin D. Rhodes, Noah James McCrary, Troy McCrary, Ellie Rhodes, and Riley Rhodes. His funeral will be held at McLean Presbyterian Church at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2026, and he will be laid to rest at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
