James Eckley “Jim” Zombro of Joppa, MD passed away peacefully on September 29, 2026 with his wife by his side. Jim was 85 years old. He was born in Richmond, VA.

Jim lived a life of service. He served in the Air Force, and he later continued that commitment through his work as a Baltimore City Police Officer serving many years in the K-9 unit. In retirement, he remained dedicated to public service, serving as a Parole and Probation Officer and as a Bailiff. His career reflected steadiness, discipline, and a lasting sense of duty.

He will also be remembered for the simple pleasures that brought him happiness. Jim loved dogs, exercising, a good long walk and recording family videos to capture many special moments. Jim was an avid bowler who developed a love for bowling at an early age at the local bowling alley where he set bowling pins. Together with his wife, he enjoyed a weekly bowling league for many years. His bowling technique also carried over to throwing horseshoes, a game he enjoyed playing with close friends. He appreciated an ice-cold glass of water, a bowl of vanilla ice cream and had a great love for popcorn, small comforts that will remain fond memories to those who knew and loved him.

Above all, Jim was a family man. He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret Zombro of Joppa, MD. He is also survived by his brother Charles Zombro of Hanover, PA; children William Todd Zombro of Hanover, PA, Laura Kuhns of Hanover, PA, Kara Zombro of New Oxford, PA, David Szyjka (Kristin) of Baltimore, MD, and Marcia Nystrom (Torbjorn) of Fairfax, VA; his grandchildren Ashley Cline, Allyson Montour, Jessica Gardner, Samantha Humphrey, Rachel Nguyen, TJ Zombro, and Sofia and Stina Nystrom; great-grandchildren and many cherished friends. His family and friends carry forward his memory with love and gratitude for the time they shared with him.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, John and Gertrude Zombro; his brother John Zombro; his sister Marie Duston; and his son, Stephen Mark Zombro. Their memories remained a part of his life and are now joined with him in rest.

Those who knew Jim will remember a man of service, loyalty, discipline, and quiet enjoyments, whose life touched his family, friends and the communities he served. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Jim to the First Responders Children’s Foundation.
