Janet Yager George

Janet Yager George, age 71, of Herndon, Virginia, a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by her loved ones on Friday, August 14, 2026.

Born on June 21, 1955 in Los Angeles, California, Janet was the first of four children of William Lawrence Yager and Virginia Lee Hamon. Her family moved from California to Herndon, Virginia, where Janet resided for the remainder of her life. She majored in Physical Education at Virginia Tech, where she was also a Golden Heart for Sigma Phi Epsilon. Janet went on to marry Terry Dean George of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania in 1978. After raising her three young children at home and helping on their family Blueberry Farm, she began working for Fairfax County Public Schools in an essential office support staff role at Crossfield Elementary School. In those 26 years, before retiring, her comforting smile and welcoming arms made a lasting impact on countless people that became an instant part of her extended family.

While living in Herndon, Virginia, Janet enjoyed her designated roles of both ‘OHS Band Mom' and ‘OHS Girls Lacrosse Mom’, while chaperoning and volunteering at various extracurricular activities for her children. Janet also loved and looked forward to vacationing in the Outer Banks, North Carolina; whether it was her family's annual Seafood Night or getting Fatboyz Ice Cream, the beach was her special place. One of Janet’s other loves was the Virginia Tech Hokies; anyone that knew her, knew Janet's preference for Maroon and Orange, especially during football season. She had a knack for predicting countless game-changing interceptions. It was a special talent that made everyone laugh.

For 16 years, Janet put up a valiant fight against Fallopian Tube Cancer. During that time, she exemplified strength, grace, patience and positivity. Her life was full of love, kindness, and an unwavering devotion to her family and friends. She will be remembered for her warm heart, generous spirit, and the joy that she brought to everyone that knew her. Janet's greatest happiness came from spending time with her children and her cherished grandchildren. They were the highlight of her life.

Janet is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Terry George; her son, Brian George (Vivian) of Ashburn, Virginia; her daughters, Jenna Peterson (David) of Purcellville, Virginia, Emily Clark (Dylan) of Reston, Virginia and her beloved grandchildren, Kade, Kinley, Chloe, Cassian and Crew. She also leaves behind three siblings, John Yager, Doris Judge and Robin Heltibridle, as well as many extended family members and close friends who will miss her dearly.

Her love, strength and wisdom will remain forever in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Though she will be greatly missed, her family finds comfort in the many beautiful memories they shared and the lasting legacy of love that she created.

In lieu of a memorial service and flowers, Janet requested that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. She also had a love for animals and hoped, if so inclined, donations would be made to the ASPCA or a local shelter of your choosing in her honor.
