Jeffrey Thomas (Jeff) Boyd, 56, of Annandale, VA passed away on May 18, 2026 after a determined battle with esophageal cancer and spending his final days surrounded by those who loved him.
Jeff was born on November 26, 1969 to his loving parents, Tom and Barbara Boyd, in Oakland, CA. Jeff loved his hometown of Herndon, Virginia, where he spent his childhood playing soccer, swimming at Reflections Pool, and hanging out with what would turn out to be his lifelong friends. While attending Herndon High School, he was a part of the 1986 Virginia State Championship soccer team and was later inducted into the Herndon Hall of Fame, served as a peer counselor, and voted “Best Legs”- something he never let us forget.
After graduation, Jeff attended James Madison University. During his time at JMU, Jeff was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and met his cherished wife of almost 30 years, Jennie. A true Duke, Jeff loved a good party, was a master tailgater, and made many memories with friends and family in Harrisonburg. He graduated in 1993 with a B.S. in Computer Science, and began his career at the Naval Research Lab.
Jeff worked for Space Ground System Solutions for over 30 years in support of the Naval Center for Space Technology at the Naval Research Lab in D.C. Jeff specialized in the development of software used to test and operate space systems, and was an integral member of a team working to develop and operate a commercial, space-based, robotic servicing mission. The project he has worked on for the last 20 years will launch in late July, and we know he will be watching from the stars.
Jeff’s greatest joy was his family. After their marriage in 1996, he and Jennie moved to Annandale and welcomed their 3 daughters, Carly, Megan, Lucy, and many family dogs. He loved being a part of the things they were part of, whether that meant coaching soccer teams, timing at swim meets, or being a cheer dad. He showed his love not only in the big moments, but in the countless everyday ways he gave his time, encouragement, and support.
His can-do spirit and talents extended beyond his family and into his village of friends and neighbors. Jeff was a long-time board member and celebrated volunteer at the Camelot Community Club, and leaves behind reminders of his wood-working projects across the neighborhood. He was the kind of person who never needed to be the loudest in the room to make people feel supported and cared for, and will be remembered for his quick wit and perfectly-timed sense of humor.
Some of Jeff's favorite moments were spent at the beach, including many vacations to the Outer Banks and beyond with his large family, affectionately known as the Boyd Squad. He found peace near the ocean, often with a Golden Retriever by his side and a Sierra Nevada in his hands.
He is survived by his wife, Jennie; their three daughters, Carly, Megan, and Lucy; his sisters, Nancy (Jeff) Rush, Karin Boyd, and Jenny (Jeff) Kimsey; and his 12 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Barbara Boyd, and his nephew, Mason Kimsey.
Please join us in celebrating Jeff's life on Thursday, May 28th at St. Matthew's United Methodist Church in Annandale, VA at 1:00PM. A reception will follow the memorial service at Open Road Grill & Icehouse in Falls Church, VA from 2:00-5:00PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in Jeff's honor to Good Shepherd Health Institute through www.donatemymeds.org. The medication donated to Jeff through Good Shepherd extended the amount and quality of time that we had with Jeff, and we are forever grateful to their mission.
