Joan H. Herman (a.k.a. Joan Goulder) passed away January 29, 2026, while a resident of Cobbdale Assisted Living in Fairfax, Virginia. She had been struggling with memory loss, congestive heart failure, and complications from a recent stroke. She was 93 years old; one week shy of her 94th birthday. Joan was born in Detroit in 1932, the eldest daughter of Marvin and Josephine Howard. Her younger sister, Lois, predeceased her by several years. In 1958 she married Robert F. Goulder, originally of Cleveland, Ohio. Together, they settled in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. They raised two children: a daughter (Catherine) and a son (Bob). In the mid-1980s the family relocated to Reston, Virginia. Joan's husband passed away in 1996. She later remarried, taking on the surname Herman. Her second husband passed away in 2013. During her early years, Joan graduated from Grosse Pointe High School and attended Eastern Michigan University. Later in life, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, and spending time with dogs - especially her favorite corgi. In her final years she loved taking walks by the Potomac River and feeding the ducks. She is survived by her children Catherine Smith and Bob Goulder; and two grandchildren Stephanie Jordan-Smith and Caroline Smith. She is warmly remembered by her caregiver Jenny Cardenas.
