Joseph Allen Barbato was born in New York City on February 23, 1944 to Joseph and Florence Barbato. He grew up in Queens and attended Syracuse University and NYU, eventually earning a masters degree in American Studies.
Over the years, his work as an independent writer was published by The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post, and various other publications. Joe spent decades as a senior staff writer for The Nature Conservancy, mentoring many young writers and making life long friends. He went on to create Barbato Associates, a small firm specializing in case statements, proposals, and annual reports for major non-profits. Joe also published several books including Writing For A Good Cause, Patchwork of Dreams, and You Are What You Drink. He was also a regular contributor to Publisher’s Weekly and Kirkus Reviews.
He was an avid reader and he loved everything about the written word. He was a truly good man and he did his best to have a positive impact on the world. Joe loved his wife and his children deeply. He was a wonderful father. We mourn his loss but we are grateful for all the time we’ve had together. He lived a good long life full of travels, smiles, and laughter.
A private celebration of his life will be held with family and friends. We encourage donations in his name to The Nature Conservancy or the ACLU.
Joseph is survived by his daughter Louise Wyatt of Crozet, Va and his son Joseph Barbato of Alexandria, Va He is also survived by three wonderful grandchildren Kathleen, Sebastian, and Madeline.
