It is with great sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of our father and grandfather, Juan Antonio Blanco Ortiz, at the age of 82 on July 24, 2026. Juan was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, remembered for his ready smile and kind nature.
Born on January 19, 1944, in San Salvador, El Salvador, to Juan and Antonia Blanco, Juan dedicated his life to his family and community. After earning his degrees in Industrial Engineering, he managed a textile factory and served as an advisor to the Salvadoran presidential cabinet. In 1985, he married his sweetheart, Mercedes "Mercy" Herrera, a professional economist. Amidst the country's civil war, they made the courageous decision to relocate to the United States to raise their two children in safety.
Juan was a man of diverse passions and deep compassion. He would advocate for those in need and was frequently distributing food to households lacking reliable access to nutrition. He possessed an enthusiastic curiosity for geography, science, math, history, and world culture, and was often found reading the newspaper, watching National Geographic documentaries, sharing funny stories from his youth, and enjoying nature while spending time with his family.
Juan is survived by his wife of over 41 years, Mercy; his two children, Ivania and David; and his beloved grandson, Felix. He is also survived by his younger brother and several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass to celebrate Juan’s life will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Falls Church, Virginia. Details regarding the specific date and time will follow.
