Listen to Obituary

Karen L. Harris, 65 died peacefully on September 6th, 2026 in Fairfax Virginia due to complications from a stroke. Proceeded in death by her parents Edward J. Harris and MaryLee (Gearhart) Harris. Karen was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Karen moved to Alexandria, Virginia in 1986 and most recently resided in Fairfax, Virginia.

Karen received her Associates Degree from Cambria Rowe Business College. She spent her entire career in the medical field as an office manager for various orthopedic and private practices throughout the Northern Virginia area. She also spent two years living in New York City, assisting in opening a new orthopedic practice with several physicians from the DC area.

Karen loved to cook and took particular pride in a homemade batch of Pennsylvania pierogies, haluski and a big pot of pigs in a blanket. She loved to travel, the smell of peonies in spring, mani-pedis on a Saturday, fireworks any time of year, a good Bloody Mary or margarita, and any Jimmy Buffett song. Every summer you would find Karen happily sitting on a beach in the sun, watching the waves and enjoying the salt air. From the beaches of Grenada in the Caribbean to the sands of Myrtle Beach South Carolina, there wasn't a beach around she didn't enjoy. Karen also loved to entertain and could throw a party better than most, and with ease.

She adored and thoroughly spoiled her nephews, Colby and Ethan, who affectionately called her "Auntie K." She was a good partner, friend, companion, travel buddy, aunt and loving sister.

Karen is survived by David Petrasek, her partner of 20+ years in Fairfax VA, brother Robert Harris and wife Carolyn (Penland) Athens, AL; her sister, Lisa (Harris) Hoth and husband Thomas; and nephews, Colby and Ethan Hoth all of Roswell GA.

Karen will be cremated and scattering of her ashes will take place at a future date.  In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the American Stroke Association.
