Lawrence "Pete" Febinger Nugent III

September 9, 1960 – August 8, 2026

Lawrence "Pete" Febinger Nugent III, 65, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026, while in care en route to Fairfax Hospital, surrounded in spirit by the love of the family he treasured. Known fondly to friends and family as "Pete," "Petey," or simply "Nuge," he lived a life defined by warmth, quick wit, and an unshakeable devotion to those around him.

Born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, Pete carried his hardworking roots throughout his life’s journey. In his early twenties, he moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he welcomed his first two sons, before settling in Northern Virginia in 1989. Northern Virginia became his long-term home, where he raised his family, built a fulfilling career, and left an indelible mark on his community.

Pete possessed a natural engineering mind and a passion for hands-on problem solving, which led him to a dedicated career as a master HVAC technician. While he excelled at the technical mastery of his trade, his true joy came from the people. Social by nature, Pete loved working face-to-face with customers, making them happy, and turning everyday interactions into lasting connections. He was a trusted mentor to many in his field and held a heartfelt dream of becoming a teacher to guide the next generation.

Outdoors was where Pete felt most at home, whether he was fishing, hunting, or simply enjoying nature. He had a deep love of music and thoroughly enjoyed watching live bands perform. He was an avid history buff who could often be found engrossed in a good documentary. Above all, Pete was known for his sharp wit and infectious humor—he was cracking jokes and bringing smiles to those around him right up until his final days. Patient, kind, and immensely loving, his family was his absolute world.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Febinger Nugent II and Carolyn "Dolly" Mae Stone.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Lita Mezzacappa Nugent; his six cherished children, Nathan, Joshua, Cody, Melina, Corey, and Lexi; his two adored grandchildren, Atticus and Ja'siyah; and his two sisters, Kathy Edwards of Largo, FL; Kim and Tom Moore of Beaver, PA. All of his nieces and nephews, and many life-long family friends.

A celebration of life will be held in Northern Virginia in the coming month, with details to be announced by the family once finalized. In lieu of sadness, his family asks that you remember Pete by sharing a joke, spending time outdoors, listening to a favorite song or reaching out to a neighbor—just as he always did.
