Loretta Elvira
Gaigalas
Jan 2, 1940 — Mar 28, 2026
Loretta Elvira Gaigalas, a cherished soul known for her kindness, spunk, and unwavering love for both her country and her Lithuanian heritage, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, at Med Star Georgetown Hospital in Washington, DC. Born on January 2, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, Loretta was the youngest of five siblings in a family rooted deeply in Lithuanian immigrant pride. Her journey through life was marked by dedication, warmth, and an infectious spirit that touched everyone she met.
Loretta’s early years were spent cultivating a rich tapestry of talents and passions. A proud graduate of Pershing High School in Detroit in 1959, she pursued her education with determination, earning a college degree in stenography from Detroit. Her commitment to lifelong learning culminated in 2011, when she graduated from the Career Technical Institute in Washington, DC. With a career spanning 35 years working for the federal government, Loretta filled various roles as an office support specialist across the DC area, leaving a lasting mark at both the IRS and the Pentagon. Her diligent service was a testament to her dedication and strong work ethic.
Beyond her professional life, Loretta was a woman of many interests and talents. She played the piano for many years from childhood, filling rooms with the melody of her music, and she delighted in singing. Her passion for reading, cooking, and exploring new restaurants were expressions of her curiosity and zest for life. She found joy in the comforting words of Joel Osteen and cherished the moments spent feeding and watching birds, whom she often spoke to with tender affection, telling them how special they were. Her love for animals extended beyond these simple pleasures, reflecting a gentle and nurturing heart.
Loretta’s spirit was vibrant and unmistakably her own. Known for her welcoming nature and sharp sense of humor, she was a go-getter who knew precisely what she liked and had valuable advice ready to share. Her quick wit and warm laughter brought light to those around her. Serving as a Rainbow Girls Worthy Advisor and an Easter Star member, and fulfilling the role of Treasurer of the Knights of Lithuania, Loretta embraced leadership roles that enriched her community and honored her heritage. Her faith was a guiding force; she loved attending church and worshiping the Lord with deep devotion.
Family remained at the center of Loretta’s life. The daughter of Ana and Anthony Gaigalas, now departed, and eldest siblings Anthony Jr., Frank, Charles, and Leona having gone before her, she carried the legacy of her loved ones in her heart. Loretta’s affectionate nature extended to her many pets, and she treasured the companionship they provided throughout the years. She was deeply loved by her nieces and nephews—Monette Blades, Daniel Gaigalas, David Gaigalas, Jeanette Moore—and by many great and great-great nieces and nephews who will forever cherish her memory.
One can picture Loretta sitting peacefully, sipping ginger ale and nibbling on her favorite no-salt potato chips, a BLT from the Georgetown Inn perhaps nearby, as she watched games on television, a simple yet profound enjoyment of life’s small pleasures. Her life was a vibrant mosaic of family, faith, heritage, and heartfelt kindness.
Loretta Elvira Gaigalas’s legacy is one of compassion, resilience, and spirited individuality. Her kindness and humor, the music she played, the words she shared, and the love she gave will linger in the hearts of all who knew her. As we remember her, we honor a remarkable woman who lived with grace and courage, nourishing both body and soul—truly a beloved Lithuanian American whose light will never dim.
