It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Louise Green, who departed this world on March 25, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on June 15, 1929, in Washington, DC, Louise left an indelible mark on the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Louise's journey began in the heart of Washington, where she attended Armstrong High School, one of just five high schools available for Black students during the era of segregation. Her life was a tapestry woven with diverse experiences and remarkable achievements. Her career spanned many paths, each one taken with pride and tenacity. From her early days as a laundry maid for a wealthy family and a salad girl in a bustling downtown restaurant, to her inspiring role as a crossing guard, Louise’s determination was evident in all she undertook. However, it was her acceptance into the United States Post Office that stood out as a pinnacle of her professional journey, a notable achievement for African Americans at that time. She dedicated many fruitful years to the Post Office, eventually retiring and later finding joy in catering and serving as a Foster Grandparent, making a lasting impact on the youth she worked with in schools and daycare centers.
As a person, Louise was a force of nature—her energy was contagious, and her zest for life radiated in everything she did. Known for her loving and generous spirit, she had a remarkable ability to light up any room, offering comforting words and a sincere smile to those around her. Louise had numerous hobbies and interests that brought her immense joy; she loved to party to the delightful tunes of Frankie Beverly, relish the flavors of crabs, and never missed her morning ritual of coffee while praying her rosary with the sunrise. In her later years, she became a world traveler, exploring new places with an adventurous heart well into her 80s.
Louise was not only a remarkable individual but also a loving matriarch who successfully raised three generations of children, nurturing her children, grandchildren, and even helping tremendously with her great-grandchildren. She enjoyed shopping trips to the mall, attending concerts and award shows, and embraced every opportunity to get outdoors, soaking in the sunshine and the beauty of nature.
Louise is survived by her beloved son, Mervin "Tony" Green; her cherished granddaughters, Jasmin Drain and Aniysa Wilson; her grandsons, Khari Green and Nazeem Wilson; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Khalil Green, Kadir Green, Zenayla Williams, and Jade Drain. She is preceded in death by her husband, David Drain, and her daughter, Angela Drain, both of whom she loved dearly and held forever in her heart.
Even in her final days, Louise maintained a fierce independence and a dignified spirit. She chose to keep living life to the fullest, a testament to her strong life force and enduring love for family and community. Louise Green will be lovingly remembered not just for her numerous accomplishments but for the warmth she shared and the profound influence she had on generations. Her legacy of kindness, strength, and unwavering love will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
