Lucille Broadway Thompson, formerly of Raleigh, NC, passed away peacefully in Chantilly, Virginia on July 31, 2026, following complications from surgery. Her final days were comforted by the presence of her children and grandchildren, a time for which the family remains eternally grateful.

Born in Richmond County on February 19, 1936, Lucille attended Ellerbe High School before moving to Raleigh where she met her future husband, W. Hugh Thompson. Lucille’s first job and introduction to politics was with Secretary of State Thad Eure until her marriage and subsequent move to Texas in 1959. She and Hugh lived in Texas and Louisiana before returning to North Carolina in 1965 when Hugh entered law school at UNC-Chapel Hill. Lucille enjoyed being a stay-at-home mother during her children’s younger years; volunteering both in their schools and the community. She was an active member and served on many Boards and Commissions in her church, Millbrook United Methodist Church.

In the early 1980’s Lucille resumed her professional career with the North Carolina General Assembly, where she served as the Executive Assistant for several Speakers of the House and later worked within the NC Senate until her retirement in 2003. In their retirement years, Lucille and Hugh enjoyed many years of traveling and spending time with their grandchildren. They also loved spending time at their beach condo in Atlantic Beach. Lucille was devoted to her family and cherished times with family and friends.

Lucille was preceded in death by her husband Hugh; her parents, Elmer and Sudie Mae Broadway of Richmond County; her brother Lawrence Broadway; and her sister Ann B. Asbill.

She is survived by her son Ty Thompson of Aldie Virginia, his wife Ja’Ree and their children Peyton and Brielle; and her daughter Kim Samaha of Sliema, Malta and her children Mary Samaha of New York City and Michael Samaha of San Francisco.

The family expresses their deep gratitude to the memory care staff in Chantilly, Virginia for the care and support she received; as well as to Hospice for the comfort provided in her final days.

Lucille was cremated upon death in Virginia. A memorial service will be held at Millbrook United Methodist Church in Raleigh this fall.
