Mary Ann Bender, née Settles, passed away on April 11, 2026, in Washington, DC, at the age of 81. Born on April 17, 1944, in Edgefield, South Carolina, Mary dedicated over five decades to the nursing profession. Even after her retirement, she remained committed to caring for others by continuing part-time work in visiting nursing, a testament to her enduring passion and dedication.

Mary Bender was the very embodiment of resilience and strength. Standing just 4 feet 11 inches tall, her commanding presence and unwavering spirit made her an unforgettable figure to all who met her. She faced life’s challenges without surrender, battling chronic pain over many years with a steadfast faith in Jehovah God that fueled her courage and endurance. Her indomitable character made her a true warrior, inspiring many during her lifetime.

Known for her deep love of animals, Mary delighted in watching Animal Planet and found joy in “conversations” with her loved ones’ pets, often requesting to speak to her family’s “fur babies” by phone. Her faith and fellowship were central to her life, bringing her comfort and joy whether in person or participating through Zoom with her church family.

Mary’s legacy of strength, independence, and uncompromising spirit will forever be treasured. She leaves behind a devoted family: her son Antonio Bender and daughter-in-law Marcella Bender; her niece and daughter Teresa Settles; sisters Jessie Robinson and Betty Williams; brothers Charles Settles, Leroy (Duke) Settles, William A. Settles (Dove), William (Jack) Settles, Edward (Eddie) Settles, and Orlando (Leon) Settles; brother-in-law Rudolph Robinson; sister-in-law Frances Settles; and grandchildren Brandon Rumph, Jalisa Settles, Antonio Bender Jr., Antania Bender, Jacques Bender, along with eleven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her special great nephew David Green Jr., numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and a devoted extended church family.

Mary’s passing follows that of her parents, Charlie Settles and Lillie Mae Brown; her son John Calvin Settles; granddaughter Marcia Settles; grandson John Calvin Settles Jr.; and sisters Lillie Settles and Sally Mae Settles.

May Mary Ann Bender forever remain dear in our hearts and minds. Those fortunate enough to have known this short, fiery woman recognize her as truly one of a kind. Her legacy of compassion, perseverance, and faith will continue to inspire all who knew her.
