Mary Edith Weisel was born on Jan. 6, 1933 in Phillipsburg, NJ, to George Heck Weisel and Sarah Rachelle Griffith, and was raised in part by her Aunt Florence. Mary weighed a mere 2 pounds, 14 ounces at birth and yet developed into a lovely woman who touched countless lives over her 93 years.

After earning high marks in high school, Mary attended the Teachers College of New Jersey on partial scholarship. She returned to her hometown and taught school. As a young professional, Mary’s former teacher Marie Seikel played matchmaker! Oskar Lynch Seikel (Marie’s son) and Mary fell in love, married, and built a beautiful life. The newlyweds embarked on a 3-year Panamanian adventure courtesy of the U.S. Army. Mary taught school in the Canal Zone and enjoyed life as a military spouse abroad before returning stateside to DC/VA. Son Erik Louis and daughter Susanna Marie were welcomed, and when Oskar deployed overseas, Mary proudly maintained a vibrant household. She earned a Masters of Teaching and thrived in her role as a elementary teacher with Prince William County Schools. After retiring, she became a devoted grandmother to Arianna and Shannon Rose, helping raise them, as well as supporting the community by tutoring local students. Her respect for nature was evidenced by volunteering with the Virginia Cooperative Extension as a Master Gardener, eventually earning the coveted Golden Trowel Award. She enjoyed fulfilling times with the Red Hat Society, Bel Air Women's Club, American Association of University Women, and embarking on Bluebird trips. She loved her church family at Lutheran Church of the Covenant and served as a Sunday school teacher and Vacation Bible School volunteer. Mary was predeceased husband Oskar, siblings David, Susanna, and Michael. She is survived by her two children, two grandchildren, and loving nieces, nephews, and friends. Services will be held on Sat., June 27, 2026, 4:30 PM, at Lutheran Church of the Covenant, 15008 Cloverdale Rd, Dale City, VA 22191. Burial will be alongside her sweetheart at Arlington National Cemetery. Internment will be private. Mary was an advocate of going with the flow, and lived a serene life knowing "the peace of the Lord passeth all understanding.” The family prays that you experience the Peace that Mary knew and shared.
