Matthew Ray Gibbs, a devoted horticulturist and beloved family member, passed away on May 7, 2026, in LaPlata, Maryland. Born on November 13, 1970, in Ames, Iowa, Matthew embraced a lifelong passion for horticulture that shaped both his career and his spirit.
From an early age, Matthew found joy in nurturing plants and understanding the natural world. This passion guided him through various roles across several states, allowing him to cultivate his expertise and share his love for nature with many. Eventually, Matthew settled in Maryland, a decision influenced by his relationship with his brother, Marshall Gibbs, and the desire to be near his nephews, Jack Riley and James Riley Gibbs. His affection for them was profound, and he treasured the moments they shared together.
For a significant period, Matthew lent his talents to Mount Vernon, a historic estate maintained by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union, a private, non-profit organization. His dedication and enthusiasm for his work were evident to all who knew him, as he embraced each day with eagerness and pride in his contributions to preserving such a special place.
Matthew's intellect was a notable part of his character. He possessed a rare ability to engage effortlessly with strangers, carrying conversations on a variety of subjects with ease and warmth. This trait endeared him to many and reflected the thoughtful and curious person he was.
He leaves behind his mother, Linda Gibbs; his stepfather, Tim Sharpe, whom Matthew affectionately called "Pop"; his brother, Marshall Gibbs; his uncle and aunt, Chuck and Mary Robertson; and a host of nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.
Matthew Ray Gibbs will be remembered not only for his professional dedication and skill but also for the kindness and connection he showed his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the beauty he helped to cultivate throughout his journey.
