Eula Maxine Vance, affectionately known as Grandma to grandkid's friends and neighbors, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, in Arlington, VA, surrounded by her extended family. Born on October 2, 1936, in Crossnore, North Carolina, Maxine’s journey began in the mountains where she was raised in a large family on a dairy farm. This humble beginning laid the foundation for a life defined by dedication, love, and artistry.

Maxine was a master seamstress whose talent transcended mere craft. Balancing the demands of raising five children with a thriving career, she shaped not only fabric but the very tapestry of her family’s lives. Her work ranged from designing and sewing dresses and accoutrements for complete wedding parties to creating stunning window treatments, pillows, and throws that graced many homes. Her meticulous skills extended into the commercial realm, where she crafted sets of samples vital for local manufacturers’ bids—each piece a testament to her precision and creativity.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Maxine ran her household with a discipline akin to military precision, yet warmth and compassion were the pillars of her leadership. She gently instilled in her family the belief that love and kindness were not just biblical virtues but the true pathways to happiness. Eula’s servant leadership was marked by her attentiveness to every detail of her loved ones' lives; she was perfectly poised between being involved and giving space, yet always present exactly when needed.

Her maternal affection knew no bounds. She followed the careers and travels of every child and grandchild with steadfast devotion. Whether calling to Stockholm, Amsterdam, Bonn, Haifa or Mogadishu, she ensured practical reminders—like packing an umbrella—were never forgotten. Each night her bedside held her atlases and Bible, tools she used to track her family’s journeys and to offer prayers for their safety, binding her familial love with spiritual grace.

Maxine's talents extended into the kitchen, where she honored her mother’s legacy as a fantastic cook. Her banana pudding, meatloaf, and party chicken recipes became treasured family heirlooms, guarded carefully and served with loving care. Each visitor was treated to their favorite dish, a meal she watched over closely to ensure every bite was savored.

Her green thumb was the stuff of legend—her gardens and house plants brought vibrant life and sensory joy to all who experienced them. She possessed the remarkable gift to coax beauty from the earth in any setting, nurturing growth as she did her family.

Among her most cherished creations were the elaborate quilts she painstakingly designed and sewed for every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild. These quilts were not simple blankets but personalized masterpieces, each composed of hundreds of elements woven together in perfect harmony by her expert hands.

Maxine is survived by her devoted sister-in-law Jean Vance, sons Richard Buchanan and wife Michelle, Keith Buchanan and wife Debi; her beloved daughter Kimberly Quimby and husband Doug; and her loving grandchildren Max Morris and wife Heather, Wyatt Dulaney and wife Dace, Blake Buchanan and wife Christina, Brooke Lauer and husband Brian, Kyle Quimby and wife Kristin. She also leaves behind a treasured circle of great-grandchildren: Dalija, Deborah Maxine, Caden, Cohen, Arlan, Bo, Eliza, Saylah, and Evie, who will carry forward her legacy of love and strength.

Maxine was predeceased by her daughter Debra Dulaney; her son James (Bo) Buchanan; her parents James and Jody Vance; her brothers Ray, Harry, Sam, Jim, Johnny and Tom; and her sisters Marianna, Gladys, Barbara, Helen, Elwanda, Elmira and Joda Blanche.

Though her passing marks the end of an era, Maxine Vance’s spirit endures in the hearts she touched, the family she nurtured, and the exquisite art she left behind. Her life was a tapestry of unwavering faith, tender care, and creative mastery—woven forever into the memory of all who knew her.
