Michael John Steven Egan, of Vienna, Virginia, passed away December 30, surrounded by his family, after 85 years of love and devotion on this earth.
Mike was a devout catholic, beginning as an altar server, self-funding his North Catholic High School tuition, and as an adult proudly serving decades as an usher and in many volunteer roles at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, in Vienna, Virginia. A Pittsburgh native, he was a fan of the black and gold in all sports, and found time in his sports-loving heart for some DC area teams, too.
He was at the forefront of IT when Allegheny Airlines discovered his talents and moved his young family from Pittsburgh to northern Virginia. There he and Mary Pat, his wife of 60 years, established deep roots in their church, youth softball, and their community. He retired from American Airlines after several decades.
Mike always had service in his heart. He embraced volunteer roles as a coach and then commissioner with youth softball in the area and president of the Vienna Girls Softball League, formerly the Vienna Pigtail/Ponytail League.
He received the Humanitarian Service Award in 1983, citing November 12 of that year as Mike Egan Day, in recognition of securing a softball program of unparalleled excellence for the youth of Vienna and for performing loyal service in raising funds and computerizing the league. Following the softball years, Mike became a girls' fast pitch umpire at the high school and college levels. While he was a sought after 'ump', he also took on the role of commissioner of the Northern Virginia Fast Pitch Softball Umpires Association. After his retirement Mike volunteered for several years at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts and at Dulles Airport.
Family and his church were always first for Mike. He leaves his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Pat (Reid) Egan, 4 daughters, Michele (Frank) McGuire, Suzanne Egan (Bohle), Renee (Greg (†)) Clough, and Colleen (Eric) Gsell, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one on the way in June, brother David, and 30 nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by siblings Catherine, Paul, Joan, Charles, Howard, Richard, Daniel, and Cecelia and his parents Howard and Dorothy.
