Michael Duane Hubbard, 70, passed away on May 6, 2026, in Alexandria, Virginia leaving behind a legacy of service, craftsmanship, mentorship, and devotion to family.
Born on August 15, 1955, in Akron, Ohio, Michael lived a life defined by hard work, integrity, and a deep commitment to helping others. After graduating from Buchtel High School in Akron, Ohio, Michael proudly served in the United States Army including overseas service in Germany. During his time in the military, he earned recognition as a Hand Grenade Expert and M-16 Rifle Sharpshooter, distinctions that reflected his discipline and dedication.
Following his military service, Michael moved to Washington, D.C., where he met his long-time companion, Laura. He then moved to Virginia where they raised their four children. Shortly after their first child was born, Michael joined his union, and devoted more than 40 years to the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America; During which, he built not only structures, but also lasting relationships and opportunities for others through instruction, leadership, care, and dedication to his craft.
Throughout his career, he served as a Union Representative, instructor, trustee on the executive board for over 20 years; Mentor and advocate for working people. Michael’s dedication took him back to the classroom, at Pennsylvania State University pursuing an Associate’s Degree and completing certifications for classroom instruction on rigging, and various course objectives vital to the industry which he taught to generations of apprentices and carpenters, sharing his knowledge with patience, pride, and a strong belief in the value of skilled labor and union brotherhood. Michael’s impact extended far beyond the jobsite. In 2016, he was honored as the Citizen Carpenter of the Year by the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters. The award recognized his selfless contributions to the betterment of his community and his embodiment of the union’s highest ideals. Michael then served as President to his Union from 2018-2021. His joy and fidelity kept him working with the Union even after his retirement in 2022.
Those who knew Michael will remember his strength, wisdom, humor, resiliency, and unwavering willingness to support and protect others. He carried himself with a joyous charisma and left an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Michael was preceded in death by his Father, James Hubbard Jr., his Mother Cora Jean Dodds, and his Life companion, Laura Hartwick.
Michael is survived by his children, Michael Washington, Alek Hartwick, Sophia Hartwick-Hubbard, Anna Hartwick-Hubbard, Isaac Hartwick, Lewis Bullock; His grandchildren, Mikayla Washington, Joseph Hartwick-Gregory; His siblings, September Dodds, Crystal Dodds, Cory Dodds Sr., Shernette (John) Robinson, Tina (Richard) West, Jemella (Zach) Martin. Also cherished in memory by Aunt Dottie, extended family, nieces, nephews; Chosen Family, Elijah Bullock; His friends, his Union brothers and sisters, former students; and many more whose lives he touched through his guidance and generosity.
Michael’s life was one of service, to his country, his union, his community, and most importantly, his family. His memory will continue to live on through the people he taught, supported, and loved.
