There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: A time to be born and a time to die." Ecc. 3:1-2. David Michael "Mike" Riggs, born on December 15, 1952, in Suffolk, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on February 13, 2026, in Virginia Beach. A beloved husband, father, and friend, Mike cherished the bonds he forged with those around him, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and service.

Mike dedicated much of his life to a career in telecommunications, making significant contributions to remarkable projects including his tenure at Boeing, where he was involved in developing the Inertial Upper Stage rocket system for the USAF and NASA, as well as the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWAKS). He continued to leave his mark in the tech world through his work at GTE Telenet/Sprint International/Alcatel, contributing to the advancements in Packet Switching, a precursor to modern internet and cellular technology.

Education played a pivotal role in shaping Mike's journey. He was proud to have grown up in the Tidewater area, where he graduated from Aragona Elementary, Princess Anne High School in 1971, and then pursued a degree at Old Dominion University, which he completed in 1978 with a B.S. in Mathematics. His commitment to serving others also extended to his military service in the Naval Junior Reserve Officer's Training Corps followed by active duty in the US Navy on the USS Arcturus, where he served as a boatswain's mate and postal clerk from November 1971 to September 1973. He then completed his active reserve service in January 1976.

Those who had the pleasure of knowing Mike were drawn not only to his diligent work ethic but also to his vibrant personality. Fondly known as "Bubba," he was a thoughtful man, always remembering birthdays and anniversaries with special gestures. His ability to give the best hugs was legendary among friends and family alike, along with his sense of humor that brought joy to many. Adventurous at heart, Mike loved traveling across the United States, particularly exploring the awe-inspiring National Parks and the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, as well as venturing abroad with his beloved wife Tricia. Among his many memories, an Alaskan cruise stood out as his most cherished trip. He took immense pride in training young musicians and actively participating in mission trips and service at various United Methodist churches, with his last congregation being Lynnhaven UMC.

As a generous caregiver, Mike devoted himself to his parents Harold and Peggy Riggs, along with his mother-in-law Anne McCoy, demonstrating unwavering love and support throughout their lives. His devotion extended to his family, as he was a loving husband to Tricia for 48 years, father to Aubrey and Robert, father-in-law to Jarrid and Bremda, and a proud grandfather to Jonah, Makayah, Kayleanah "Kiki," Evangelinah "Evie," Ellah, Rowan, and Caitriona.

Emerging from a life that exemplified love, commitment, and adventure, Mike Riggs will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. His spirit of generosity, laughter, and heartfelt hugs will continue to shine in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to share their lives with him. Mike is preceded in death by his parents and leaves behind his wife Tricia, two children, a son-in-law and daughter-in-law, and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Mark and sister-in-law Sue.
