Nancy Marie Mulligan

March 25, 1948 — February 2, 2025

Washington, DC

Nancy Marie Mulligan, age 76, passed away peacefully on Sunday February 2, 2025, at Georgetown Hospital, Washington, District of Columbia. With remarkable courage and determination, Nancy dealt with blood-related cancer for many years, and based in part on her own meticulous research, was treated at Brigham and Women Hospital and the Dana Farber Institute in Boston. She became friends with those she stayed with and those in her Shared Journeys support group at Dana Farber. Boston became almost a second home to her.

Nancy was born in Wilmington, Delaware, and attended Ursuline Academy and Brandywine Junior College. She worked for many years as an administrative assistant and patient coordinator at Georgetown Hospital at the Department of Ophthalmology. Nancy was nominated for the MedStar SPIRIT excellence award, and was named employee of the month. Patients routinely sent notes to thank her for guiding them through procedures. Despite her own medical challenges, she constantly showed empathy towards others. She lived independently in Georgetown. Her faith was important to her and regularly attended Catholic Mass at Holy Trinity Church and Saint Stephen Martyr. Nancy had a keen sense of fashion, a self-acknowledged sweet tooth, an underrated sense of humor, was an avid reader and loved a good walk. Nancy was a generous and loving aunt to her nieces and nephews.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents, and her brother, James M. Mulligan, Jr., and his wife Caroline. She is survived by nieces and nephews, James M. Mulligan III (wife Katherine), Theresa Grillo (husband Vince), Claire Hill (husband Karl), and Joe Mulligan (wife Jill), grandnephews Michael Grillo, Kurt Hill and Kevin Hill and many cousins. She also leaves behind friends/neighbors at Kew Gardens, friends and colleagues at work, and friends in Boston and Delaware.

A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held in Wilmington this Spring.
