Ned Allen Greene

January 22, 1937 — July 3, 2024

Ned Allen Greene, affectionately known as "Papaw," passed away on July 3, 2024, in Fairfax, Virginia, at the age of 87. Born on January 22, 1937, in Swain County, he led a life marked by dedication to his family, his country, and his many passions. Ned's military career was both distinguished and valorous. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and specialized as a Recon Marine, commonly referred to as a "frogman." His expertise extended to airborne operations, where he completed over 50 jumps, including High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) jumps. Additionally, he was certified in underwater diving, showcasing his versatility and commitment to the demanding tasks of his service.

Following his military service, Ned continued his life of service in civilian roles, working with the Forest Service as a firefighter and in avalanche control. His career path later led him to the FDA in the agriculture sector, where he continued to contribute to the safety and well-being of others.

Ned is survived by his daughters, Allison Greene-Wall and Christy Greene; grandchildren Caitlyn Bernard, Mason Greene, and Joseph Bernard. He was preceded in death by his brother Dan Greene and son Jeb Greene. A service to honor Ned's life and legacy will be held at the Marine Corps Chapel, 3251 Embry Loop, Quantico, VA, from on Saturday, July 13th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. His life was a testament to his enduring strength, love, and dedication—a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Some short stories from his grandchildren:
Caitlyn- One of my favorite memories with Papaw was sitting on the porch in the mornings and drinking coffee before work when I lived with him.

Mason- Hanging out in the living room at the house and watching Fox News with Papaw.

Joseph- Some of my favorite memories with Papaw were the times i was in high school and living with him and my mom Christy Greene. He let me and all of my friends hangout every day there (sometimes for weeks on end) , go swimming any day we wanted and never complained about people being there. He always just loved seeing us all happy and having fun there. Thank you for always supporting me and taking care of my sister Caitlyn, my mother Christy and I. I would not be half the person i am today without him and the support he has shown me all my life. In loving memory of my grandfather.
