Nicholas B.
Sumaray
January 18, 1929 – May 26, 2026
Nicholas B. Sumaray, born January 18, 1929, in Iloilo, Philippines, passed away on May 26, 2026, in Alexandria, Virginia. A man defined by his warmth, humor, and resilience, Nicholas’s life journey was marked by dedication to family, work, and community.
Nicholas emigrated to the United States, following the path paved by his brother, a Navy veteran. His career was distinguished by his expertise as an electrician, a skill he honed through trade school training. He contributed his talents to the U.S. military as a contractor stationed in Guam, and later found steady employment with Pepco Electric Company in Maryland. His professional life was a source of pride, matched only by the accomplishments of his children.
He was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life, including drawing and listening to music from his era. Known for his easygoing nature, he had a talent for making those around him laugh and feel uplifted. Even as he faced the challenges of early dementia, Nicholas’s spirit remained unyielding. A particularly touching memory from this time was his gentle kindness at church: he would sit beside another congregant who also experienced cognitive issues. Although they did not share a common language, Nicholas reached across that divide with a gesture of compassion by offering cough drops, ensuring his companion’s comfort during sermons. This silent bond left a lasting impression; the companion’s wife later recalled how her husband would ask for Nicholas in his absence.
Nicholas accepted Christ during the early stages of his dementia, embracing faith as a source of strength and solace. His personality—joyful, funny, and warm—endured throughout his life’s trials and triumphs.
He is survived by his beloved children Raquel, Audie, and Ruth, as well as grandchildren Rachel, Sarah, Emily, Nick, and Audie Jr. Nicholas also leaves behind his brother, Junior, and sister-in-law, Josie. The family cherishes his memory and the legacy of love and humor he imparted. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carina.
Nicholas B. Sumaray’s life stands as a testament to the power of kindness, professional dedication, and the enduring bonds of family. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him.
