Nicholas Weatherspoon

January 6, 1954 — December 30, 2024

Washington, DC

Our beloved and kind Father, Brother and Pop-Pop, Nicholas “Nick” Weatherspoon, (70), passed away peacefully on December 30, 2024, at the home of his daughter in Washington, DC from complications due to a stroke. He was born January 6, 1954, in Portsmouth, VA where he continued to reside most of his life. Nick was the son of Margaret (Jones) Weatherspoon and Amos Weatherspoon, who affectionately referred to him as Nicky.

Nick attended I.C. Norcom High School before volunteering to serve his country. He joined the US Air Force and Merced, California was home for a short while. After leaving the military, he returned home and settled in Portsmouth.

Nick explored various fields of employment before attending Tidewater Community College Chesapeake and choosing the electrical technology program. He loved seeing the beginning and end of residential and commercial projects. Nick came full circle when he worked on the newly developing Tidewater Community College Campus in Portsmouth…the beginning of his focus and passion. Nick completed this project with excellence.

Nick’s circle was small, but those in that circle knew him as caring, cool and carefree. His love language was shown through colorful words, homemade fresh cut french fries and a car hand washed with love. His words, “My character defects make me Nick” resonate with many that knew him. They saw him as an imperfect man with a huge heart and warm spirit. He was loved perfectly by those closest to him.

In addition to his parents, Amos and Margaret Weatherspoon, Nicholas was also predeceased by a son, Ryan Whitehead. He is survived by three sons, Jamar Weatherspoon of Norfolk VA, Kodi Weatherspoon of Charlotte NC and Bryan Whitehead of Portsmouth VA; one daughter, Kia Weatherspoon of Washington, DC; one sister Kelly Weatherspoon Artis (Alex) of Portsmouth VA; Karen Weatherspoon (the mother of Kodi and Kia) of Charlotte, NC, former spouse and dear friend; and four grandchildren. The family would like to thank Kay Bratton, sister-in-law, for her relentless, caring compassion during Nick’s last days.

A private memorial is planned for the immediate family only. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Heart Association.
