Nina Anne Marland
Nina Anne Marland, 70, of Oakton, Virginia, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026, at Inova Fairfax Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Born on December 17, 1955, in Munich, Germany, Nina was the daughter of George and Stephanie Bogdanoff, both of whom preceded her in death. Her father proudly served in the United States Army, and when Nina was about two years old, the family moved to the United States, where she was raised in Northern Virginia. She graduated from Yorktown High School and earned her bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech.

Nina began her career as a fourth-grade teacher at Weems Elementary School, where she spent ten years inspiring and encouraging young minds. She loved teaching fourth grade because every day brought the opportunity to help children discover something new. Her students still remember her patience, kindness, and genuine joy for teaching.

Nina and Gary first met in the early 1970s, when she walked into the gift shop in Georgetown that Gary and his brother owned and operated. What began as a chance meeting grew into a lifetime of love, devotion, and partnership. They married in 1977, beginning a partnership that would span forty-nine years. Through every joy and every challenge, they remained side by side, building a life centered on family, faith in one another, and unconditional love.

When their twins, Alex and Katie, were born in 1986, Nina chose to leave the classroom to devote herself full-time to her family. While Gary often worked twelve- to fourteen-hour days in retail, Nina managed their home with care, raised their children, cared for their dogs, and made sure her family always knew they were loved. Anyone who knew Nina knew that her greatest happiness came not from accomplishments or recognition, but simply from taking care of the people she loved. She never sought recognition for the countless things she did each day; caring for the people she loved was simply who she was.

Nina delighted in life's simple pleasures. She loved cooking for family and friends, tending her garden, sewing, and creating a warm and welcoming home. Nina loved animals, and over the years five beloved dogs became treasured members of the Marland family.

Her grandchildren, William and Nora, were her greatest joy. She treasured every moment spent with them, and their smiles brought her endless happiness.

Nina is survived by her devoted husband, Gary Marland; her son, Alex Marland; her daughter, Katie Durst, and son-in-law, Arthur Durst; and her cherished grandchildren, William and Nora. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Stephanie Bogdanoff.

Those who knew Nina will remember her gentle spirit, quiet strength, kindness, sense of humor and selfless heart. She touched countless lives as a teacher, but her truest legacy is the family she raised and the home she created.

For Gary, Nina was far more than his wife. She was his best friend, his partner in every sense, and the love of his life. After more than five decades together, there are no words that can fully express the emptiness left by her passing or the gratitude for the years they shared. Her love will remain in his heart forever, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a local animal shelter.
