IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Peter
Hurley
June 19, 1950 – January 17, 2026
Peter Gerard Hurley - a man of immense light, tireless energy, and an unforgettable presence - passed away on January 17, 2026. He lived boldly and unapologetically, embracing an unconventional path on his own terms and leaving behind a legacy as vivid and singular as the man himself.
Born in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, Peter was the youngest of four children in a prominent Irish-Italian family. His journey began at Pinecrest Elementary and St. Bernadette’s, where he quickly became known as a "bright light" with a spirit that tested every boundary. Peter possessed a brilliant, restless mind and a natural entrepreneurial spirit. While he navigated the world with an unyielding pride and a perspective that was sometimes misunderstood, those who knew him best saw a gifted conversationalist with a radiant, unforgettable smile.
A true "mover and shaker," Peter was an endlessly active and fierce extrovert who brought vitality and laughter into every room, leaving it warmer simply by his presence. He loved to teach, debate, and connect with others, always remaining fully and authentically himself. He took great pride in woodworking and creating with his hands, finding rhythm in the craft and power in music. His spirit was fueled by singing, whether he was lost in the soulful melodies of Motown or the soaring beauty of Pavarotti and Bocelli. When Peter sang and danced, he did so without reservation - a testament to a man who lived at full volume.
While his roots were deeply Catholic, Peter’s spiritual journey evolved into a vibrant and personal faith. In his later years, he found an intimate relationship with Jesus, a bond that mirrored his preference for the authentic and the heartfelt over the ceremonial. Amidst the movement of his days, he found profound joy in simple pleasures: a good cup of coffee, a scoop of ice cream, and quiet time spent in nature.
His greatest and most enduring legacy is his five children: Melissa (Anthony), Ethan (Kelly), Seth (Natalie), Jennifer (Ali), and Zachary (Bianca). Despite the complexities of his journey, his children remain a deeply close and connected unit - a testament to a family bond that persists through all seasons. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren who will grow up on the legendary stories of their grandfather, and his siblings, Maureen Poms, Jack Hurley, and Greg Hurley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Francis Hurley and Elinor Sgueo Hurley.
In keeping with his independent spirit, Peter chose to be cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to honor the music, the laughter, and the singular spark he brought to the world.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Peter’s honor to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital or Understood.org.
He was a man who lived loudly and was never easily defined. Peter is finally at peace.
