Raymond Works, III passed peacefully in his sleep January 16, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on August 7, 1947, in Cynthiana, Kentucky, Raymond grew up with a deep connection to the land, as his formative years were spent on a tobacco farm. This agricultural upbringing fostered a strong work ethic and a passion for farming that would guide him throughout his life.

Raymond devoted 43 years of his career to Southern States Cooperative, a reflection of his love for agriculture and commitment to serving his community. His work within the cooperative was marked by dedication and an unwavering desire to provide for his family, ensuring their lives were filled with opportunities.  

His educational journey took him to Morehead State University, where he excelled as a business student. Upon graduation he married his hometown sweetheart Jodell with whom he shared 55 years of marriage. Together, they built a life raising two daughters, Rae Carol Plantz and Rachel Alachnowicz.

He is survived by his daughters Rae Carol  and Rachel, son-in-law David Plantz, and his grandchildren Mitchell Plantz, Jacob Alachnowicz, John Raymond Alachnowicz, Maria Plantz, Carolee Alachnowicz, and Zach Alachnowicz. Each of them held a special place in his heart, and he was proud of the individuals they have become.

In addition to his familial bonds, Raymond also leaves behind a brother, Kellar Works, a sister, Judy Lane, and a brother-in-law, Paul Lane. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Wanda Works.  

Outside of his professional life, Raymond had a variety of interests that enriched his spirit. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as searching for sea glass at the beach and indulging in the excitement of horseracing. These hobbies allowed him to connect with nature and experience moments of tranquility and thrill.

Raymond’s life was defined by hard work, dedication, and love for his family.  His presence will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will forever remain in the hearts of his loved ones.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 11:00am at Grace Baptist Church, 14242 Spriggs Road, Woodbridge, VA 22193.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Raymond's name to Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church Altar Guild, 803 W. Kitty Hawk Road, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949 or Grace Baptist Church 14242 Spriggs Road, Woodbridge, VA 22193.
