Richard Eugene McLean

Richard Eugene McLean, age 90, passed away peacefully in Burke, Virginia, on 7/28/2026, surrounded by the family he loved.

Richard was born on February 11, 1936, in Durham, North Carolina. He lived a life defined by devotion to family, strength, resilience, independence, and a sense of humor that he readily shared with others.

Richard was a hardworking and enterprising man who built his own medical and dental equipment repair business. He successfully owned and operated the business for 25 years before retiring, taking great pride in the work he did and the life he created for his family.

Above all, Richard was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. His greatest legacy was the family he helped build and the love, values, and memories he passed on to them.

Richard loved fishing with his family and joking with the people around him. For him, fishing was about more than what might be caught—it was time spent together, stories shared, laughter enjoyed, and memories made with the people who mattered most. His humor and playful spirit brought joy to many of those who knew him.

After retiring, Richard made his home in Bracey, Virginia, where he enjoyed a quieter pace of life. Following the passing of his beloved wife, Mary Frances McLean, in 2015, he moved back to the Washington, D.C., area to be closer to his family. That decision reflected what had always been most important to him: being near the people he loved.

Richard is survived by his sons, Brian McLean of Franklin Manor, Maryland, and Patrick McLean of Burke, Virginia; his daughters-in-law, Missy McLean and Elaine Hock; and his grandchildren, Violet, Sam, and Sean.

His family will remember his love of fishing, his quick humor, the jokes he shared, his independent spirit, and the many family stories and traditions they enjoyed together. His influence will continue through his sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and the memories they will carry forward.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in Maryville, Tennessee, where Richard will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, Mary Frances McLean. Additional details will be shared with family and friends once arrangements have been finalized.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in Richard’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association. Donations may be made at Alzheimer's Association or heart.org.

Although his absence leaves an immeasurable space in the lives of those who loved him, Richard’s legacy remains in the family he cherished, the laughter he shared, the lessons he taught, and the memories he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
