Richard Thomas Milanich, 79, of Rockville, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2026.

Born on March 27, 1947, in Chicago, Richard was the son of Elizabeth Shirley Milanich and Louis Milanich. He lived a life marked by creativity, generosity, and a deep sense of quiet dedication to those around him.

Richard proudly served in the United States Army, enlisting in 1978 and rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant before retiring in 1990. His military service reflected his strong sense of duty and commitment.

After retiring from the Army, Richard built a career spanning more than 20 years as a medical photographer with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Through his work, he combined technical skill with compassion, continuing to serve fellow veterans in a meaningful and lasting way.

Richard had a lifelong love of creativity. He found joy in photography, gardening, cooking, and painting—pursuits that reflected both his artistic eye and his appreciation for simple, meaningful moments.

He met his wife, Ellen, while photographing her sister’s wedding—a moment that marked the beginning of their life together. They were married in August 1990 and shared many years together.

Richard experienced the heartbreaking loss of his son, Ryan Milanich, in the early 1990s. He is survived by his loving wife, Ellen, and his son, Robert.

Richard will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, in honor of his service to his country.

He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, creativity, and the steady presence he brought to the lives of those who knew him.
