devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, engineer, traveler, and man of God,
Richard lived a life marked by service, adventure, and unwavering love for his family. He is
predeceased by his parents, stepfather Robert Johnson, brother Robert, sister-in-law Sandra,
and infant son Bartholomew. He is survived by his brother Peter Jr., sister Margaret, beloved
wife of 58 years Katie, children Kayleen (Roy), Theresa, Richard (Harmonie), and Dominic
(Brenda); and the joys of his life, his grandchildren Anthony (Kaitlin), Gabriel (Sammi), Michael,
Autumn (Jesse), Caleb, Joshua, Elliana, Elisabeth, and Elena; and great-grandchildren Aubrey,
Xzander, Jaxon, and Maximus, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Richard grew up in Baldwin, New York where he attended St. Christopher’s Catholic School
followed by Oceanside High School where he ran track and played baseball. He graduated from
City College of New York with a bachelor’s degree in engineering and later earned his Master of
Mechanical Engineering from The Catholic University of America.
He met Katie in 1966 at MaBell (Bell-Atlantic) Telephone Company and they married in June
1968. They relocated from New York to Maryland in 1969 and then to Virginia in 1975 where
they built a home. He worked for the federal government at Naval Sea Systems Command
(NAVSEA) for 41 years as a nuclear engineer and continued supporting NAVSEA as a
contractor before fully retiring to pursue his passion for travel and spend more time with family.
Richard and Katie raised their children in Fairfax and were active members of Pender United
Methodist Church for more than 30 years. He was a member of United Methodist Men and
participated in annual mission trips to Philippi, West Virginia for more than 20 years.
An avid traveler, Richard visited all 50 states (taking Katie to 49) and traveled abroad. Among
his favorite adventures were RV trips with his grandchildren.
Richard spent much of his time studying the Word of God, teaching Bible studies, and joyfully
sharing an enthusiastic “Amen” during Sunday morning worship services. He served as the
President of Coaches for Christ and was active with the Family RV Association (FRVA –
formerly known as Family Motor Coach Association) serving as President of the Capitol
Chapter.
Richard’s family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Ligonier Ministries, founded
