WINCHESTER, Va. – Robert Lewis “Papa Bob” Merrill, 66, passed away on Feb. 1, 2026, in Winchester, Va.

Born on Jan. 3, 1960, in Portland, Bob grew up in the nearby town of Saco. He graduated from Thornton Academy in 1979 and soon after answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. During his decade of service as a Military Police officer, Bob was stationed across the country and abroad—including assignments in Texas, Alabama, Alaska, and Germany. His time at Fort Hood sparked a lifelong loyalty to Texas professional sports teams.

Bob was known for his kind and loving nature. He had a deep affection for animals, especially his cherished cat, Becky. He also held a special fondness for Chihuahuas—a trait he lovingly inherited from his mother.

He is remembered with love by his sister, Stefanie, brother, Steven, and sister, Cathy Ann. Bob was also the proud father of three daughters, Elizabeth, Jesse, and Julie. His legacy continues through more than a dozen grandchildren who brought him great joy.

Bob was predeceased by his father, Orman, mother, Elsie; and sister, Julie Ann.

A private service will be in the spring at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco.
