Dr. Robert Tucker “Bob” Wingate, 88, formerly of Hampton and Williamsburg, VA, passed away on February 20, 2025, in Chantilly, VA after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born on October 15, 1936, in Anniston, AL to Dorothy Inez (Mathews) and Henry Taylor Wingate, Sr., Bob grew up in Auburn, AL. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Auburn University. In 1959, Bob joined the nascent National Aeronautics and Space Administration at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. While with NASA, he earned his master’s and doctorate degrees from UVA and Virginia Tech, respectively. Dr. Wingate was selected for the NASA Senior Executive Service and was awarded the NASA Exceptional Engineering Achievement Medal, among other honors, during his career. He retired from NASA in 1995 after 36 years of service.
Bob was a long-time, active member of the Hampton Christian Church and, later, the Walnut Hills Baptist Church in Williamsburg. Serving as both a deacon and elder, he deeply cherished the fellowship and close friendships he had with both congregations.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Audrey (Ingram); his parents, Henry and Inez; his sister Carol Dianne Wingate, and his brother, Henry T. Wingate, Jr. He is survived by his son, Robert J. Wingate of Huntsville, AL; daughter, Laura Gerst of Fairfax, VA; and grandsons William “Liam” Gerst of Fairfax, VA and Bryce Gerst of Centreville, VA.
