Ronald Frederick Rula, a devoted husband, father and veteran passed away peacefully on September 7, 2026 after a brief illness. Known for his kind, lovable character, thoughtful nature, and quick-witted, endless sense of humor, Ron left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
Born June 11, 1960, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Ron lived a life filled with love, laughter, and service. Ron was a devoted husband to Terry, with whom he shared a beautiful and enduring romance, culminating in their marriage after 25 years together. He was a loving and proud father to his daughters, Daneen Rula and Monique Rula (deceased) and his son Andrew “Keoki” (Sieate) Bognar, with whom he recently reconnected. He also embraced his role as a stepfather to his first wife Ginny’s children, Dennis Cahill, Tanya Kauwe, Chuck Caulk, Glen Caulk (deceased), Mark Caulk, Debra Caulk, Matthew Caulk, Christopher Caulk, Lance Caulk and Jeanette Mills and Terry’s children Christy (Marv) Rahman, Kenneth (Serenity) Smith, and Jeffrey Smith, and was a cherished grandfather to eleven adoring grandchildren. Ron was also cherished by his biological mother, Pauline Doucette, sisters Wendy Niemir (Kevin) and Pam (Billy) Morrone, Charlotte (Kent) Ford, and Roseanne Stewart and his nieces and nephews Danielle (Jon) DeSantis, Kevin (Danielle) Niemir, Adan Morrone, Tyler Morrone, Harris Ford and Alex Ford (Jacinda).
From a young age, Ron demonstrated a commitment to service and protection, enlisting in the U.S. Navy at just 17 years old. His distinguished military career spanned over two decades, during which he spent 14 formative years in Hawaii before returning to the U.S. mainland. Ron also served as a Navy instructor, sharing his knowledge and passion with younger generations, and served in both Gulf Wars. One of Ron's proudest accomplishments was his contribution to the construction of the USS Cole, and he took immense pride in being a plank owner of this remarkable vessel. He concluded his esteemed military career with his retirement off of the USS Cole in Norfolk, Virginia. After the Navy, Ron carried that same spirit of devotion into his professional life by working briefly with the Virginia Beach School System, then transitioning to a career as a Navy government contractor, where he was known by colleagues and friends as an exceptionally hard worker who took great pride in everything he did. And he was always there with his muscles and tool bag to help out his friends and neighbors . He was everyone’s Handy Man. He knew things and he fixed things.
Ron was a man of deep substance who balanced his fierce protective nature with a gentle loving heart. He was the ultimate protector to all whom he loved, always putting the needs of his family and friends above his own. He relished the simple joys of life and loved spending time with family and friends, engaging in lively conversations over a few beers, and showcasing his impressive trivia skills. His quick wit, sarcasm and infectious laughter brought joy to all who knew him, leaving behind countless cherished memories and many, many “Ron Stories.”
Ron was predeceased by his adoptive parents Stanley and Helen Rula, his daughter Monique, stepson Glen, biological father Wendell Gregory and stepfather Greg Doucette.
His legacy of love, laughter, and service will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May Ron’s soul rest in eternal peace, and may his laughter echo in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
Service arrangements will be announced at a later date.
