Rosa Elina
Mercedes
Jun 24, 1947 — Sep 15, 2026
Rockville, Maryland
Rosa Elina Mercedes was born on June 24, 1947, in La Romana, Dominican Republic, to the late Nicanor “Nico” Mercedes and Altagracia “Mami Nango” Mercedes. She was raised there alongside her brothers and sisters, surrounded by the family bonds that would remain deeply important to her throughout her life.
After marrying the father of her children, Gerardo Cueto, Rosa migrated to Washington, D.C. Little by little, she helped bring her parents and several of her siblings to the United States, helping to establish the Mercedes family in Washington, D.C. She later moved to Maryland, where she would remain.
Rosa worked relentlessly to provide for and support her children. She worked as a housekeeper, sold items she skillfully sewed herself, and also worked at the United States Senate, where she remained until her retirement.
Rosa found great joy and purpose in her faith and was an active member of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Her devotion was reflected in her weekly meetings, her preaching, and the many Bible studies she conducted with newcomers. She especially enjoyed attending her yearly conferences, where she was always sure to arrive looking flawless, beautifully dressed, and impeccably styled.
Rosa had a true love for clothing and fashion and could happily shop for hours. A gifted seamstress, she often saw outfits in stores and recreated them herself, making matching or duplicated outfits for herself and her children. Sewing was a talent she shared with her sisters and her father and became another expression of her creativity, resourcefulness, and love for her family.
And then there was red—a color that seemed made for Rosa. In her younger days, she loved wearing her signature red lipstick, a small but unforgettable reflection of the elegance and confidence with which she carried herself.
She also had a special love for red roses. Rather than letting their beauty simply fade away, Rosa would carefully dry and collect them, preserving each one long after its bloom had passed.
Perhaps there is something beautifully fitting in that. Like the red roses she treasured and preserved, the beauty of Rosa’s life does not disappear with time. It remains in the memories she created, the faith she shared, the sacrifices she made, and the family she loved so deeply.
Rosa’s legacy is one of love, faith, strength, and family—a legacy reflected in the life she lived, the family she helped build and bring together, and the faith she so deeply cherished. Like the roses she once carefully kept, her memory will be lovingly held onto, treasured, and carried forward for generations to come.
