Heywood
February 10, 1942 – November 2, 2025
Samuel Winslow Heywood, a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, proud veteran, and cherished friend to many, passed away peacefully at his home in Mount Jackson, Virginia, on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the age of 83.
Sam was born on February 10, 1942, in Greenville, South Carolina, the eldest son of the late Caroline and Carl Heywood.
A true patriot, Sam dedicated his life to service and Country. He served with distinction in the U.S. Army Reserves for over 20 years, where he excelled as a Combat Medic in Special Forces and later in Civil Affairs. Following his retirement from federal military service, his patriotic sense of purpose continued for several years as an active member of the Virginia Defense Force. In parallel to his military career, Sam had a successful civilian career and retired as a dedicated civil servant with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). His unwavering love for Country was a defining hallmark of his life.
Sam possessed a vibrant spirit and was often the life of the party, always ready with his harmonica for an impromptu tune. He was a man of deep faith who loved fellowship, praise, and worship, frequently attending several local parishes. Known for his generous nature, he could always be counted on to offer a ride to church, a testament to his commitment to his community and faith.
Sam will be deeply missed by his loving family. He is survived by his son, Daniel Heywood, daughter-in-law, Jennifer Heywood; his beloved grandson, Dominic Heywood; his brother, David Heywood; and his sisters, Anne Heywood Fragola and Dr. Beth Heywood.
