Samuel Sungmoo Lee

January 6, 1941 — September 11, 2024

Vienna, Virginia

Samuel Sungmoo Lee went home to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, September 11th, 2024. He passed away at Inova Fairfax Hospital, surrounded by his wife and children. He was a beloved servant of God, cherished husband, dearly loved father, wise grandfather, and doting great-grandfather. Affectionately known as “Sam” or “Mr. Lee”, he was a friend to everyone he met.

Samuel was born in Hamheung, Northern Korea, on January 6th, 1941. His early life was marked by adversity, as his family and church escaped religious persecution and the imminent threat of death under the Communist regime for refusing to compromise their beliefs. Their perilous journey ended with their rescue aboard the SS Meredith Victory, the last US Navy vessel departing the shores of their homeland in December, 1950. His family made their way to Seoul, South Korea, and settled there.

Samuel’s commitment to doing what was right and persevering through hardship was grounded in his steadfast belief in the teachings of the Bible. As a young man, Samuel served honorably in the South Korean Air Force, married his sweetheart Song Hee on May 08, 1964, and worked as an electrical engineer. However, he longed for a better life for his wife and children, and in 1971, he entered the United States on a work visa to establish residency and a green card in the hopes of bringing his family over. Three years later, he returned to South Korea, packed up his family, and returned to the United States in 1976, settling in Arlington, VA, for 11 years, then to Vienna, VA.

Samuel loved working with his hands and was a natural problem solver. It is no surprise he found an affinity to the watch/ clock and jewelry repair business. He built a reputation in the 25 plus years as an horologist, renown for his craftsmanship, incredible mechanical forensics, and his integrity to his work and customers. After retirement, he was continually sought after for repair work by antique dealers and collectors.

The morning after his passing, Samuel’s eldest daughter found a note tucked in his Bible marking the book of Joshua. Two little notes were jotted on the page - “ Son set you free” and “ It is finished.”

Samuel Lee was set free, indeed, from the trappings of his fragile body. He finished his work as a child and servant of God on this earth.  He was received by his Lord and Savior into God's glory.  Rest in peace, Samuel, good and faithful servant. Your journey is complete, and you are now in the embrace of the Lord you so loved.

Samuel Lee is survived by his loving wife, Song Lee, their four children, Jeannie (David) Borden, David, Daniel, and Sandy (Scott) Kennedy, six grandchildren, Jinae, Emma, Hannah, Sam, Caleb, Matthew, and two great-grandchildren, Cordelia and Clark, and many friends who were touched by his kindness and generosity. His memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of all who knew him.
